PORTRAIT OF MARIANNE

by Richard E. Berg-Andersson (1976)

Portrait of Marianne was my very first Jazz Fusion piece, written in 1976 while I was still a student at Boston University... Marianne was a college friend of mine who lived in my first dormitory at B.U. during my sophomore year there; an Art major, she did a sketch portrait of me late in the 1st semester of that year (Fall 1975... by the way, I still have the sketch portrait- one of my treasured possessions!): I promised her that, in return, I would do a "portrait" of her in MY art form, Music! The theme was written early in the 2d semester of my sophomore year (late Winter 1975/6) but the piece was then put aside and not completed until I was back at B.U. the following Fall (that of our Nation's Bicentennial- during 1st semester of my junior year... hey!! GREAT Art takes TIME!!!)... By the way, Marianne never, to my knowledge, ever heard her musical "portrait"; I had already lost regular contact with her (B.U.'s a fairly large school!) by late 1976 and I saw her only once more, very briefly and rather unexpectedly, at the B.U. Graduation ceremony for our mutual Class of 1978 nearly a year and a half after I had finished this piece.
